Brazil’s police fired tear gas to disperse protesters near the Maracana stadium hosting the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, the Agencia Brasil news agency has reported.
The demonstrators who protest against using the budget funds for organizing the Olympics in Brazil set a national flag on fire and used it to imitate the Olympic torch relay, according to the report. Several people felt sick and sought medical assistance after the police fired tear gas.
The opening ceremony of the 31st Summer Olympics kicked off at the Maracana stadium in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro on Friday. This will be the first Olympic Games to be held in South America. The Paralympic Games will take place from September 7-18.
