Every second Russian (49%) is afraid of a recurrence of the economic crisis of 1998 in the coming year. This information was received from a survey conducted by the Russian center for public opinion research (VTSIOM).

«Every second Russian (49%) is afraid of a recurrence of the economic crisis of 1998 in the coming year. First of all, it is predicted by those who, in their own words, still have not recovered from the default (68%). The youth speak about it more often than the elderly (52% vs. 42%), the low-income — more often than people with incomes above the average (56% vs. 41%). At the same time, 40% of citizens consider a recurrence of that situation impossible», — says the press-release of VTSIOM which was published on Friday.

According to most respondents (62%), the crisis of 1998 affected them and their families negatively. Also, 25% of respondents said that the consequences were very serious, and only after a long time they were able to return to their former living conditions, but 10% still have not restored the former prosperity. Only 2% of respondents said that after the financial crisis of 1998 they landed on feet. Every fourth resident (27%) did not feel noticeable effects of the default on himself.

The poll was conducted on 23-24 January, it was attended by 1,600 people in 130 populated localities in 46 regions, territories and republics of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.5%.
